Route 340 Scheduled To Be Closed In WV This Wkn

Engineers will be checking stability of rocks on the mountain.

A section of Route 340 in West Virginia will be closed so engineers can check the stability of rocks on the mountain.

Lee Thorne with the West Virginia Department of Highways said every year 1-2 rocks fall onto the roadway.

“We want to evaluate, to check and see what the chances are of rocks falling, and then if there is remedial action that needs to be taken, they’ll probably make some recommendations, and then the next step would probably go to a design,” Thorne said.

He said there are ways to secure the rocks if they are unstable.

“Netting over everything or a heavy cable and wire type mesh,” Thorne added.

Route 340 will be closed January 13-14, 2018, between 7 AM-5PM. The closure will be between Washington Street/Shoreline Drive in West Virginia to Route 671 in Virginia. The intersection of Route 340 and Chestnut Hill Road will also be closed.

Tourists will be able to access downtown Harpers Ferry, Bolivar, and Harpers Ferry National Historical Park.

Motorists will be detoured to Route 9 in West Virginia and Harpers Ferry Road in Virginia.
