Snow Pounding Frederick County, Creating Treacherous Driving Conditions

SHA is out plowing and treating.

Frederick, Md (KM). Tuesday, March 20th is the first day of spring, but obviously, Old Man Winter didn’t get the memo. Snow has been falling across Frederick County and other jurisdictions all day, and that precipitation is expected to continue into Wednesday.

The National Weather Service has issued a Winter Storm Warning until 8 PM on Wednesday for Frederick, Washington and Carroll Counties in Maryland, and Jefferson, Morgan and Berkeley Counties in West Virginia. The agency says the region could receive between 10 and 16 inches of snow.

THe State Highway Administration says it has crews out plowing and treating the roads. “Pavement temperatures Tuesday afternoon are mostly remaining in the mid to upper 30’s throughout much of the state,” says spokesman Charlie Gischlar. “However, areas north and west are just above freezing.. So you could go one mile and lose a degree and you could be facing some isolated coverage on the roadway.”

“Motorists are urged to reduce speeds and be especially cautious on the elevated sections of roadway, which include bridges, ramps and overpasses,” says Gischlar.

For truckers, SHA says some park and ride lots which can accommodate large vehicles will be open so drivers can park their tractor trailers. “Additionally, MDOT–SHA is going to be staging those heavy duty tow trucks capable of clearing disabled tractor trailers in areas that are known to be challenging when a snow or ice storm hits the area,” says Gischlar.
