Local Leaders Speak Out on Plans to add Toll Lanes to I-270

Rockville, MD (KK) – County executives and council presidents from Frederick and Montgomery Counties are urging state leaders to expand a study on I-270. The Maryland Department of Transportation recently began an environmental impact study on Governor Larry Hogan’s Traffic Relief Plan which would add lanes to I-270 and I-495.

Local leaders wrote a letter to the governor and Transportation Secretary Pete Rahn expressing their concern that the study only goes as far as Gaithersburg on I-270. In the letter, leaders suggest including transit in the study, as well.

“We’re trying to call on the state now that they must include that, so that the bids they get back also include transit as an option,” said Hans Riemer, Montgomery County Council President.

The Traffic Relief Plan is expected to cost $9 billion.
