Frederick Man Sentenced to 15 Years for First Degree Assault

Spencer Goodman pleaded guilty to the charge.

FREDERICK, MD. (LG)   A 27 year old Frederick man will be spending a long time behind bars for first degree assault.  “We were really happy today to get a lengthy sentence on Spencer Goodman,” said Charlie Smith, Frederick County States Attorney.  “It was really a terrible case.”

Goodman was sentenced to 25 years on Thursday, with all but 15 years suspended.  “He’s going to be on five years of supervised release once he gets out.”

The incident happened last November. “Officers from the Frederick Police Department responded to the 400 block of West South Street for a domestic assault.  The victim called 911 and stated that her boyfriend, Spencer Goodman, tried to kill her, and she advised that they had an argument, of all things, over a broken bong,” Smith continued.

“He stabbed her with shards of glass as the result of this broken bong, and then he goes and grabs an axe, literally striking her in the head with it, causing her significant lacerations.  The victim had to be transported to Shock Trauma for her injuries.”

“Goodman was found in the apartment with blood on his clothes and hands by officers, and of course there is this double sided axe next to him on his bed.  So, we were very happy with the outcome of this case.  The guidelines call for 5 to 10 years, and we recognize that the judge take those guidelines very heavily, but for us, we had to take into account the severity of this case, and the injuries to the victim, so we asked for a sentence above the guidelines and we were able to get it.”
