Frederick, MD (KK) – A scam is going around social media involving the Comptroller’s Office. It’s a message claiming that the recipient is owed money by the Comptroller and can access it by giving a processing fee. Joe Shapiro, director of communications for the Comptroller’s Office, says one person was scammed out of $250.
“Our office would never use social media to make contact with you if we have unclaimed property or any kind of tax refund for you,” said Shapiro.
Anyone who gets a message like this is encouraged to contact the Comptroller’s Office.
