Sheriff’s Office Investigating In-Custody Death

Authorities say the individual had a history of  asthma.

 

 

Frederick, Md (KM) The investigation continues into the death of a Frederick man who passed away while in police custody.

The Sheriff’s Office says deputies were dispatched on Thursday at around 6:30 AM to the 7100 block of Cypress Court to serve an arrest warrant on Robert Joseph Robey, 27, for violation of probation and reckless endangerment. Robey fled on foot after making contact with deputies, but was apprehended a short time later.

He informed deputies that he had a history of asthma and was having difficulty breathing. His family provided him with a prescribed inhaler, and deputies helped Robey use the device.. Medics were dispatched to the scene and took over Robey’s care. .

Robey’s health deteriorated and he went into cardiac arrest. But medics were able to restore his pulse, and transport him to Frederick Memorial Hospital.

On Friday evening, the Sheriff’s Office says it was notified that Robey passed away.

His body has been taken to the State Medical Examiner’s Office for an autopsy to determine and cause and manner of death.

The Sheriff’s Office Criminal Investigation Unit is conducting an investigation into Robey’s death. Along with that, the agency’s Office of Policy and Compliance is conducting a separate but parallel investigation into this incident.
