Federal Grand Jury Indicts Man Wanted For Bank Robbery In Frederick

Authorities say he’s also a suspect in bank robberies in other jurisdictions.

Frederick, Md (KM) A federal grand jury has indicted a man wanted for a bank robbery in Frederick. On June 20th, 2018, the panel charged Gary Barnett, with four count of bank robbery, armed bank robbery and attempted bank robbery.

The Frederick County State’s Attorney’s Office says it referred Barnett’s case to federal authorities after he was charged with multiple bank robberies in other jurisdictions. “Being able to prosecute several robberies in one case at one time just makes sense,” says State’s Attorney Charlie Smith, in a statement. “Plus you have the added benefit of no parole sentences in the Federal system.”

On March 16th, Frederick Police responded to a robbery in progress at the PNC Bank on West Patrick Street, but the suspect fled by the time officers arrived. Investigators say the defendant, wearing a fake beard, sunglasses and a hoodie, handed the teller a note which read “I have a gun. No Die Packs.”

A detective assigned to investigate the case was contacted on April 16th, 2018, about a robbery which occurred in Cumberland, with a suspect which matched the description in the Frederick case. Police say Barnett was developed as a suspect in these two cases.

On May 4th, 2018, the defendant was apprehended as he approached the BB&T Bank at 1370 West Patrick Street. Officers found a piece of paper at Barnett’s feet which said he had a gun and that none of the bills he wanted would have dye packs.

Later on, Barnett told police he wrote the note, and that he intended to rob the BB&T Bank on West Patrick Street, according to authorities. He also told investigators he robbed the PNC Bank in Frederick, and the bank in Cumberland.
