MDOT SHA On Tap to Improve 10 Miles of US 40 in Frederick County

Motorists should expect daytime single lane closures.

(August 24, 2018) – Shortly after Labor Day, the Maryland Department of Transportation State Highway Administration (MDOT SHA) will begin a project to patch US 40 (Baltimore National Pike) between the Washington County line and the I-70 crossover. The $800,000 project will be complete late-fall.

The pavement patching project will add years of service life to the asphalt and significantly improve ride quality for thousands of motorists each day. MDOT SHA’s contractor, F.O. Day, Inc. of Rockville, are permitted to work Mondays through Fridays between 8 a.m. and 4 p.m. and occasionally on Saturdays between 8 a.m. and 4 p.m.

Motorists can expect single lane closures guided by a flagging operation during patching and line striping operations. The 10-mile section of US 40 has a range of average daily traffic between 6,200 and 8,400 vehicles per day. Motorists may want to use I-70, which runs parallel to US 40, as an alternate route.

MDOT SHA has resurfaced or treated half of all state highway lane miles since 2015. This milestone marks the improvement of nearly 8,500 lane miles, calculated by miles of highway multiplied by the number of lanes, improving safety and enhancing the customer experience for millions of drivers across the state.

While MDOT SHA and its transportation partners work hard to maintain safe traffic mobility in work zones, each driver needs to actively modify his or her driving style to help prevent crashes. Stay alert and look for reduced speed limits, narrow driving lanes and highway workers. Slow down and don’t follow too closely.
