Frederick, Md. (DG) – The National Weather Service has issued a flash flood watch for our region from 10 AM this morning through late tonight.
As the remnants of Florence weaken and move northeast, heavy rainfall can be expected. There is an isolated threat for severe thunderstorms today, and an isolated tornado cannot be ruled out. The combination of gusty winds and saturated ground may result in downed trees and isolated power outages.
Average rainfall amounts of 1 to 2 inches are expected, with some locations receiving higher rainfall amounts. Due to the wet summer, this amount of rain may result in rapid rise of water on local creeks and streams.
A flash flood watch means that conditions may develop that lead to flash flooding. Flash flooding is a very dangerous situation.
Do not attempt to drive through a flooded road. Six inches of water will reach the bottom of most passenger cars causing loss of control and possible stalling. A foot of water will float many vehicles, and two feet of rushing water can carry away most vehicles including SUV’s and pick-up trucks.
