Traffic Calming Devices Being Installed Near Sugarloaf Elementary School

Officials say it’s a way to keep kids safe.

Urbana, Md (KM) Some traffic calming devices are being installed in the Villages of Urbana nearly the newly opened Sugarloaf Elementary School. The Frederick County Department of Engineering and Construction says a three-inch high “Watts profile” speed hump will be placed on Lew Wallace Street, and a three-inch raised crosswalk is being installed at Stone Barn Drive and Urbana Pike.

Officials say the devices are intended to slow vehicles to a reasonable speed. “We want to slow down traffic because we want kids to be safe,” says County Executive Jan Gardner in a statement. “Parents brought their concerns to staff, who immediately evaluated the situation to determine what the County could do to help children safely navigate their way to school.”

Gardner said her staff worked with the Division of Public Works and the School System to find the best solution to traffic concerns. The County contacted an outside vendor to install the traffic-calming devices at specific intersections in the Villages of Urbana, statement from the County Executive’s Office says.

But these traffic calming devices will not prevent snow plowing operations, or impede emergency vehicles, according to the County.

Construction work began on Tuesday and will continue through this week.  Warning signs will be installed  to remind motorists of the traffic calming devices and the pedestrians at Sugarloaf Elementary School.
