EF-1 Tornado In Mt Airy Damages Buildings and Homes

Friday’s storm damaged the roof of T.J. Maxx and HomeGoods

Mt. Airy, Md (DG) – An EF-1tornado caused extensive damage in Mt Airy on Friday night.

Doug Alexander, Public Information Officer with the Mt Airy Volunteer Fire Company, said buildings and homes were damaged,and hundreds of trees were brought down.

“We had quite an active evening with high winds and torrential rains for about 45 minutes,” he said.

The storm caused a partial roof collapse of the T.J. Maxx and HomeGoods Store in the Twin Arch Shopping Center.

Numerous trees fell on mobile homes close to Interstate 70.

“We had three mobile homes that were heavily damaged by trees falling on them, but fortunately no one was injured in that incident or in the T.J. Maxx incident,” Alexander said.

Two men in Baltimore were killed after an EF-1 tornado caused a building to collapse at an Amazon distribution warehouse on Friday night..
