Frederick, Md (KM). About 10,000 people from Central American nations are traveling through Mexico, with their eventual destination the United States. They say they are fleeing grinding poverty, violence and corruption in their native countries.
But Peter Hussey, the Director of Strategic Deterrent Studies with the Mitchell Institute for Aerospace Studies of the Air Force Association, says if these people made it to Frederick, caring to their needs would be costly for local and state governments. “If you take them, bring them in at 10,000, and they conform to most people who come here as immigrants, have the same level of use of services–they need fire protection, police protection, some will use welfare, some won’t have jobs and so forth–it’s going to cost the city of Frederick $24-million a year. And then it’s going to cost the State of Maryland $480-million a year, just to take 10,000 people,” he said.
Hussey was a guest last Saturday on “Success Happens” on WFMD, hosted by Jennifer Charlton.
While many of these people are only carrying as many of their possessions as possible, and very little money in case they are robbed, Hussey says this caravan is being financed. “This is all be organized. It’s been organized by Venezuela, George Soros, and others, who use a Honduran non-profit that doesn’t have to be transparent. They don’t have to tell you where they get the money,” he says. He also says a lot of its tied up in the politics of Central and South America.
Soros was born in Hungary. After he escaped from that country following World War II, Soros became a financier, and has donated money to liberal causes. Some criticism of Soros has been labeled anti-Semitic because he’s Jewish.
In his speeches about the caravan, President Trump has charged that Middle Eastern terrorists have infiltrated these movements and are heading to the US. Hussey says terrorists do travel with immigrants who want to come to America. “As the President of Guatemala and the President of Honduras have said, hundred people from ISIS have been arrested trying to go through Guatemala and Honduras to get the United States of America in the last two years,” he says.
Recently, the President has talked about ending birthright citizenship through executive order. Scholars of the US Constitution have stated that can only happen if another Amendment is added to the Constitution, and that measure needs to pass both Houses of Congress, and a large majority of the state’s legislatures for it to take affect.. But Hussey Congress can do that. “If Congress can amend the 14th Amendment by statute–which it did about making American Indians legal, and diplomats were not–then you can amend {it} by statute by law by Congress,” he says.
Article 1 on the 14th Amendment to the Constitution reads:
“All persons born or naturalized in the United States and subject to the jurisdiction thereof, are citizens of the United States and of the State wherein they reside. No State shall make or enforce any law which shall abridge the privileges or immunities of citizens of the United States; nor shall any State deprive any person of life, liberty, or property, without due process of law; nor deny to any person within its jurisdiction the equal protection of the laws.”
