Brad Young was re-elected School Board President.
Frederick, Md (KM). Two incumbents and two newcomers took their oaths of office on Wednesday to serve on the Frederick County Board of Education.
Broad Young was sworn in for a third term on the School Board. He says he maintains a positive attitude about the local public school system. “Today, it’s so easy to find negative news, to turn on the TV and hear negative things. I’m not that person. I realize they’re there, and we’ll work on them. But I choose to be the one to promote, support and make Frederick County an even better school system,” he says. Young was first elected to the Board of Ed in 2010, and re-elected in 2014 and 2018.
Liz Barrett also took the oath of office. She talked about the hard work and rewards of being on the School Board. “It’s a tremendous time commitment and I have a growing family,” she said. “But.at the end of the day, it’s so worth it. It’s so worth the service. And to have the voters of Frederick County come out and support our campaign again was just tremendous and it was so meaningful.”
Jay Mason ran for a seat on the Board of Education two years ago, but lost. However, the second time proved the charm. “I’m excited to be elected to the Board of Ed. It’s a been a few years to get here. But when you set a goal and achieve it, it’s very exciting. It’s very rewarding. I’m just excited to get to work,” he said, after being sworn into office.
Another newcomer is Karen Yoho, whose a retired teacher. In her remarks about being sworn in, Yoho said she will listen to citizens, like former members April Fleming and Colleen Cusimano. “I think a lot of the community is going to miss them because they feel as though they really listen, and I know everybody on the Board does. But I want you to know that’s not going to change. We’re here for you, and we want to hear from you,” she said.
Miller lost her re-election bid in 2018. Cusimano decided not to seek another term on the Board of Education.
Following the swearing in ceremony, the School Board met to elect officers. Brad Young was chosen for another term as President, and Joy Schaefer was elected as Vice President.
The Board of Ed will be one-member short when Ken Kerr resigns. He was elected to the House of Delegates from District 3B. The County Executive will decide who will fill that seat.
