Suspect Identified In Fraud Incident

Fraudulent charges placed on victim’s bank account.

 

Frederick, Md (KM) An investigation begun by the Frederick County Sheriff’s Office has led to charges being filed. Edgar Lopez Mercado of the Bronx in New York City has been charged with two counts of fraud identity/ information theft between $1500 to under $25,000.

Authorities say an investigation began on July 24th, 2018 after a Frederick County resident reported being a victim of identity theft, and that fraudulent charges were made on that person’s bank account in excess of $16,000. With the help of allied agencies, a detective identified Lopez Mercado as the suspect in this case, claiming he entered the victim’s bank in New Jersey, falsely identifying himself as the victim. He received a new debit card and made several large withdrawals from the bank and an ATM machine.

The charges were filed against Lopez Mercado on December 4th, 2018. .
