Frederick Citizens Urged To Keep Storm Drains Clear During Heavy Rains

A Floodwatch remains in affect through Friday afternoon.

 

Frederick, Md (KM) A Flood Watch is now in affect in the city of Frederick, and surrounding areas. . The National Weather Service issued the flood watch beginning at 7:00 PM Thursday, covering Frederick and Carroll Counties, and most of Montgomery and Howard Counties, along with Loudon County, Va., and Berkeley and Jefferson, WV.

The Weather Service say rainfall amounts are expected to be one to two inches, but three to four inches are possible.

In Frederick, the Department of Public Works urges citizens to clear storm drains near their homes and/or businesses, and to check them periodically to make sure the drain intake is free of debris and leaves. This will help reduce the possibility of flooding, and prevent water from accumulating on streets, sidewalks and yards. The City of Frederick has about 5,00 storm drains.

The city also urges residents to be mindful that some roads tend to flood during  heavy rains.  They are:

In other weather-related news, the National Weather Service has issued a River Flood Watch for the Monocacy River in Frederick through Saturday afternoon. The flood stage is 15-feet, and that may be approached by Friday evening. Surrounding residents should prepare for possible flooding, meteorologists say.

The agency says there’s a River Flood Watch for the Potomac River at Point of Rocks.from Saturday afternoon until further notice. Flood stage is 16-feet which could be reached by late Saturday morning. The Weather Service says preparations should be made for flooding at this time.
