Five Beagles Injured In Christmas Eve Fire Released

They underwent Hyperbaric Oxygen Treatment.

Frederick, Md (KM) Five of the 21 dogs rescued from the Christmas Eve fire at the Middletown Valley Beagles Kennel were released on Tuesday. That’s according to the CARE Veterinary Center in Frederick which says the dogs suffered from severe burns and smoke inhalation when they were brought in.

In a statement, the CARE Veterinary Clinic says the five Beagles were immediately examined by veterinarian Brenda Austin. ” As soon as the patients arrived at CARE, our team began determining the extent of the their injuries and administered emergency treatment,” Austin says.

Austin says the CARE center used the hyperbaric oxygen therapy (HBOT) on the dogs which speeds up their recovery process. “This advanced therapy option is a painless and non-invasive treatment, which greatly improves their chance of survival,” she says. “Currently, the prognosis for the dogs is guarded. They have a long way to go, however, we’re glad to be able to provide specialized treatment and care that gives them the best possible chance a full recovery.”

The CARE center also says veterinarian Kelly L. Gellash joined the dogs’ care after they were initially examined and started received HBOT treatments. “They are lucky to be alive and will continue their recovery under the supervision of their primary care veterinarian. Burns can be very dynamic and need significant care throughout the healing process,” Gellash says in a statement.

CARE says it’s the only veterinary hospital in Maryland with a hyperbaric oxygen chamber specifically designed for small animals, and can be used to treat a variety of conditions, including smoke inhalation, severe trauma, thermal burns and extensive wounds.

The fire claimed the lives of 15 beagles and other animals.
