Three Middle School Students Win Md. Imagination Destination Competition

They hope to go to Kansas City, Mo. for the Global Competition.

Frederick, Md (KM). It’s on the next level for Team WOAH. The team composed of 7th graders from Windsor Knolls Middle School won first place in the State Destination Imagination competition on March 30th at the University of Maryland Baltimore County campus in Towson.

“Destination Imagination is a problem-solving competition that stresses creativity and team work and out-of-the box competition,” says Meg Lee, the Advanced Academics Supervisor for Frederick County Public Schools.

Team WOAH consists of Skylar Robisch, Nicole Simmons and Duncan Ways. Their managers are Andrea Morley and Rob Robisch.

The School System says Team WOAH  took part in the ” Heads Up” challenge where they had to improvise. They also had to include a “flip” event revealed to them during the performance, which required them to switch their performance genre from comedy to tragedy and from verbal to non-verbal communication. Team WOAH’s skit began as a sitcom-style comedy that the students had to change to an improvised non-verbal tragedy.

The Destination Imagination Global Finals will take place in Kansas City, Mo. from May 22nd through May 25th. Lee says the team hopes to raise money to pay for their trip. “One of the issues with Destination Imagination is that they do need to bring teams together from all over the world which is quite pricey. The finance structure is that they have a team registration fee to pay as well as their own travel expenses to get to the competition in Kansas City,” says Lee.

The registration fee is $5,500 per team. Lee says the Team WOAH is seeking to raise $10,000. She says GoFundMe page has been set up. “I know there’s a lot of advocacy going on on behalf of these teams from lots of us throughout the school system., and also in the local Frederick community who is always so gracious in supporting student opportunities like this, ” she says.

Anyone who would like to help out these students can search GoFundMe for the WIndsor Knolls Destination Imagination Gobals Page.
