Frederick Residents Are Victims Of New Type Of Identity Theft

Victim’s mail was used steal identity


Frederick, Md. (DG) – There are new reports of identity theft in Frederick County and police are warning residents to be cautious.

The Frederick County Sheriffs Office is reporting between March 24, 2019 and April 10, 2019 they received numerous reports of identity theft in the areas of Old Receiver Rd., Rocky Springs Rd., and Shookstown Road in Frederick.

The victims said they didn’t receive any U.S. Mail for several days. Victims were also notified that new credit card accounts were being opened with their personal information.

During their investigation, police learned that several victims had their U.S. Mail fraudulently placed on “hold” on the United States Postal Service website.

Detectives are trying to determine how the hold status was placed and how the credit cards were applied for fraudulently.

Authorities are urging residents to get a free copy of their credit report, and to look over it carefully for any discrepancies.

Police say if you have to mail a check, to drop it off directly at your local post offce.
