Camp Invention Coming To Frederick County This Summer

It will take place at four local elementary schools.

Frederick, Md (KM) If your child has an interest in science, technology, engineering and mathematics, you may want to enroll he or she in Camp Invention. “Camp Invention is an annual summer camp for kids age K to 12, and it introduces these young innovators to invention and prototyping which really makes them relatable and fun,” says Ken Torisky, a spokesman with the National Inventors Hall of Fame.

He says Camp Invention is a way for kids to find their “inner inventor” through hands-on activities. He says the camp has four modules. : Innovation Force is  where campers team up with the Innovation Force to fight the evil Plagiarizer who steals the world’s greatest ideas. In this module, the kids learn about the importance of intellectual property and the US patent system.

In another module, called :Deep Sea Mystery, the students embark on an adventure at sea to dig up fossils. They invent the island survival tools  and underwater equipment.

The Farm Tech module puts campers in charge of managing their own farm as they learn the basics of running a business. They put together a mock experiment to check the health of newly acquired livestock.

The DIY Orbot allows children to explore  frequency, circuit boards, motors and gears as they use reverse engineering to develop  a remote controlled robot.

“The students are actually making a lot of these inventions just through their own imagination and following the topic of that particular module,” says Torisky.

At the end of the program, Torisky says, the students will bring home  a robot.

Camp Invention will take place at Waverly Elementary School from July 15th through July 19th; at Whittier Elementary School from July 8th to July 12th; at Monocacy Elementary School from July 15th to July 18th; and at Twin Ridge Elementary School from July 15th through July 19th.

Torisky says a lot of students who have a strong interest in science will benefit from Camp Invention, but you don’t have to be a “science geek” to enroll. “It’s certainly true that the kids who come to camp are interested in science. But really we find that kids come from all backgrounds  and interests. They see an opportunity and they ask their parents if they can come,” he says.

Parents who want to sign up their children for this camp can go on line to invent.org/camp.

Camp Invention is a program of the National Inventors Hall of Fame in partnership with the US Patent and Trademark Office. There are 1800 camps around the US and Puerto Rico, along with  130,000 students.
