SHA says the contractor will be installing a concrete barrier and two traffic lights.
Dickerson, Md (KM) Motorists who normally travel the Route 28 (Dickerson Road) bridge over the Monocacy River in Frederick County will need to make some adjustments the weekend of May 31st to June 3rd. The State Highway Administration says the span will be closed starting at 10:00 PM on Friday, May 31st, and will reopen on Monday, June 3rd at 5:00 AM.
Spokesman Charlie Gischlar says traffic will be detoured to Md. 109 (Old Hundred Road), Md. 355 (Urbana Pike), Md. 80 (Fingerboard Road) and Md. 85 (Buckeystown Pike). “The total closure and detour are necessary to set the concrete barrier in advance of the installation of a temporary traffic signal that’s going to alternate traffic throughout the duration of the bridge rehabilitation project which should be going on until spring 2020,” he says.
“After the total closure on June 3rd, MDOT SHA is going to open one lane of Md. 28 and alternate traffic using two temporary traffic signals installed at either end of the bridge,” says Gischlar. “This is going to be 24-7 so motorists should plan some extra time there.”
SHA says the bridge is structurally sound, but the bridge deck has outlived its usefulness and needs to the replaced. The construction will include replacing the bridge deck, and sections of the steel truss bridge structure. It will also include repaving the concrete bridge piers, and removing debris which has built up under the bridge.
The project costs $7.5-million, SHA says. The contractor is Croman Kokosing Construction Company of Annapolis Junction, Md.
About 9300 vehicles use that section of Rt. 28 each day, according to SHA.
