Frederick Charity Devoted to Building Beds Looking for Donations and Volunteers

No child should be without a bed, and a Frederick non-profit is doing its best to make sure fewer children have to experience it.

Frederick, MD – A Frederick non-profit is looking to help children in need by building beds for those without.

With the slogan, “no kid sleeps on the floor in our town,” Sleep in Heavenly Peace is a charity with chapters across North America specializing in building and donating beds to children in need.

Frederick SHP Chapter President Lou Stavely said the organization was started in 2012 when a man in Indiana had built and donated some beds to families in his neighborhood.

“He found out there was a big need for [beds],” Stavely said. “He got some friends involved and next thing you know, he started Sleep in Heavenly Peace and started chapters across the country.”

Stavely said SHP came to Frederick a year ago and began raising money for wood and building supplies.

“People are very receptive,” Stavely said. “Nobody wants to see a kid sleeping on the floor.”

Frederick Chapter recently participated in Bunks Across America earlier in June where all SHP chapters across the country hosted a build day.

“The bunks that were made were 2,729 and a half bunks,” Stavely said. “That means we got 5,459 kiddos off the floor and into a bed”

Currently, SHP has no future builds currently planned. Stavely said the chapter is waiting on more funds to start filling in bed requests.

“We have to wait until we get more donations to build beds and buy mattresses,” Stavely said. “I’ve got to find a corporate sponsor that’s willing to come up with $3,500.”
