Brunswiok, Md (KM) If the Route 464 (Point of Rocks Road) bridge over Little Catoctin Creek east of Brunswick is part of your daily commute, you’ll need to make a few changes starting next week. The State Highway Administration will be closing that span on Monday, July 8th.

Spokesman Charlie Gischlar says the bridge is being replaced. Already, utility relocation has been completed. “Now comes the time to expedite the project and replace that entire bridge just to close and detour beginning on July 8th, and that’s going to go until the end of the year,” he says.

Motorists will be detoured fromĀ  Olive School Road to Route 180 (Jefferson Pike), to Route 17 (Petersville Road). “Because of that increase of traffic that’s going to put Olive School Road at Maryland 180, that intersection, very busy., we’re going to install a temporary traffic signal there to make sure that people can access each leg of that intersection,” Gischlar says.

He says bridge was constructed in 1933. It has undergone rehabilitation over the years, but Giscvhalr says it’s outlived its useful life. “The new bridge is going to wider, obviously. We put in bicycle-compatible shoulders for the bikingĀ  community. It’s also going to be a little longer so underneath you have some capability of moving more water underneath,” says Gischlar. “It’s going to be a modern bridge and something that will be there in decades to come.”

The project is expected to cost $4-million.

SHA says about 3700 motorists cross that bridge each day.
