Frederick Residents Beat the Heat

Temperatures will be in the 90’s

Frederick, MD – The sun is beating down on the city of Frederick this week, as Maryland experiences its biggest heat wave in 3 years.

High temperatures doesn’t always mean people avoid the outdoors. Food trucks lined the street near Baker Park serving meals and ice cream to people trying to beat the heat.

“I usually just refuse to go outside if I don’t have to,” said one Frederick resident while he was waiting in line at an ice cream truck. “But I’ll come outside for ice cream.”

Also walking through Baker Park was Frederick Safety Assistant, Alysia Portner who said staying hydrated is extremely important, especially in high temperatures.

“[Stay] hydrated with water, Gatorade, whatever you can,” Portner said. “Take breaks when you go outside, find some shade.”

Portner also explained the importance of sunscreen, even if it’s a cloudy day.

“On days like today, you can get sunburned and skin cancer so quickly,” Portner said. “Even if it’s overcast, it’s even worse if it’s overcast.”

Below are some safety tips to keep you and your family safe while you have fun in the hot weather.

Stay hydrated – Don’t wait until you’re thirsty to drink. Make sure you have plenty of water with you when you plan activities.

Wear sunscreen – If you plan to be out in the sun for extended periods, make sure you apply and reapply throughout the day. Also keep track of the UV index indicating the risk of heavy sun exposure.

Know the signs of heat related illnesses – Muscle cramping, headaches, nausea, dizziness, and heavy sweating can all be symptoms of heat stroke or heat exhaustion, and you should move to a cool place as soon as possible
