Reisterstown, Md (KM) A test of the Emergency Alert System will take place on Wednesday, August 7th. . The Federal Emergency Management Agency in coordination with the Federal Communications Commission will send out the test at 2:20 PM to radio and television stations, cable, wireless service providers and direct broadcast satellite providers.
“Our vision to shape a resilient Maryland where communities thrive begins with awareness and preparation,” says Russ Strickland, Executive Director of the Maryland Emergency Management Agency, in a statement. . “It is vital that the public knows the National Emergency Alert System, how it’s used and why it’s important for to all Marylanders. It is necessary to test the system on a regular basis, and each test gives us the opportunity to raise awareness about it.”
MEMA is not involved in the test, but the agency says it is helping to make residents aware of the test and the Emergency Alert System.
The test will evaluate the readiness of the national alerting system in the absence of internet connectivity, should there be an emergency, says MEMA. The test will be one-minute long, and have a minor impact on radio and TV station programs. It is similar to the monthly EAS tests.
