New Procedures For Surrendering Pets In Place At Frederick County Animal Control

Owners must make an appointment before bringing in their pets.

Frederick, Md (KM) Pet owners who want to surrender custody of their animals must now make an appointment with Frederick County Animal Control.

The agency says this will eliminate overcrowding at the animal shelter and allow the staff to evaluate the existing population and resources. And it reduces the risk of illness and disease, which often result in a large number of animals at the shelter being put down.

When surrendering their pets, Animal Control says the owners will receive information on alternatives to giving up their animals for adoption.

Last year, Animal Control says it took in more than  4,000  pets, half were surrendered by their owners.

“We understand that making the decision to relinquish your pet is not an easy one,” says Linda Shea, Director of Animal Control, in a statement. “We want to help keep pets with the families that love them. However, if relinquishment is the only solution and a last resort, we want to ensure proper capacity for care.”

The process tor taking in stray pets will not change, according to Animal Control.

Owners who wish to surrender their pets must be Frederick County residents.
