Hagerstown Man Charged With Damaging Hospital Sprinkler, Causing A False Alarm

He was a patient at Meritus Medical Center.

Hagerstown, Md (KM) The Maryland State Fire Marshal’s Office says a Hagerstown man is charged with causing a false alarm and malicious destruction of property. Chad Allen Callis, 37, was arrested following an incident on Sunday night in the West Wing of Meritus Medical Center in Hagestown where he was a patient.

Authorities say Callis had asked a nurse for towels in order to take a shower. After returning to his room, the fire alarm sounded, and water was observed coming from the room. Deputy Fire Marshals say Callis intentionally damaged the sprinkler system which activated the fire alarm.

The water caused an estimated $2,000 in damages.

Callis was transported to the Washington County Detention Center where he was released on personal recognizance. The Fire Marshal’s Office says if Callis is convicted, he could receive up to five-years incarceration and/or $5,500 in fines.
