Fire Damages Two-Story Retail/Apartment Building In Hampstead

Eight people were displaced.

Hampstead, Md (KM) Three people had to be rescued from a burning building in Hampstead on Wednesday afternoon, including a woman clinging to the outside of a second-floor window.

The Maryland State Fire Marshal’s Office says fire fighters from the Hampstead Volunteer Fire Company and surrounding units responded to  1222 of North Main Street, and found heavy fire and heavy black smoke coming from the second floor. It took 60 fire fighters 30-minutes to bring the flames under control.

Damage is estimated at $100,000 to the structure and $100,000 to the contents.

No injuries were reported, but eight people were displaced.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation, but the Fire Marshal’s Office says it originated in the interior of a second-story apartment unit.

The building was a two-story structure with a store on the first floor, and apartments on the second floor.
