Deadly Assault May Have Started Over A Dollar

Two teenage brothers have been charged with assault

FREDERICK, Md. (AP) – Prosecutors in a Maryland county say a deadly altercation at a fair last week may have started over one dollar.

Frederick County State’s Attorney Charlie Smith provided more details Monday about the assault that resulted in the death of 59-year-old John Weed of Mount Airy at The Great Frederick Fair. Two teenage brothers have been charged with assault, and Smith says his office will pursue manslaughter charges.

Smith says a 16-year-old asked Weed for a dollar and then threw a punch to his head. Smith says about a minute passed before a 15-year-old ran at Weed and threw another punch.

The teens’ defense attorney said they were upset when they learned Weed had died.

A judge ruled Monday that the teens remain in custody until hearings next month.
