The accident is under investigation.

Washington, MD – A crash at Mt. Lena Road and Route 40 resulted in the death of three people and two others injured.

According to Maryland State Police, troopers from the Hagerstown Barrack responded around 2:30 p.m. to a report of a traffic crash. Authorities say a Toyota Prius operated by David Stottlemyer, 58, of Boonsboro, was stopped along Route 40, waiting to make a left turn on to Mount Lena Road. The Prius was rear-ended by a dump truck driven by Jerome Murphy, 61, of Hagerstown. Both the car and the dump truck entered the opposite lane and struck two motorcycles operated by Stacy Virts, 50, of Sharpsburg, and Brooke Riley, 25, of Middletown.

Virts, Riley and Anna Stottlemyer, 85, were pronounced dead at the scene. David Stottlemyer was medivaced to Shock Trauma in Baltimore, and Murphy was taken by ambulance to Meritus Medical Center.

“Due to the extensive crash scene, and the number of those killed and injured, Route 40 had to close for a number of hours,” says Greg Shipley, State Police spokesman.

The Washington County State’s Attorney’s Office responded the scene, and was briefed by investigators. Once the crash investigation is completed, the findings will be presented to the State’s Attorney’s Office for review regarding charges, which are pending, according to the State Police.
