MLB Could Cut Ties With Frederick Keys and Hagerstown Suns

A proposal would end MLB affiliations with 42 minor league teams.

Frederick, MD – In a proposal released by the New York Times 42 teams including the Frederick Keys and Hagerstown Suns could lose their major league affiliations after the 2020 season ends.

The proposal was created to reorganize and make the system more efficient, but over 40% of the minor league affiliations will be cut as a result.

The Keys have been the Advanced Class A affiliate of the Baltimore Orioles since 1989 and the Suns have been a Class A affiliate of the Washington Nationals since 1993.

President of Visit Hagerstown, Dan Speddan, said losing the Hagerstown Suns could have a $3.5 million to $5 million negative economic impact and would also lose 45-55 summer jobs at the stadium.

The Frederick Keys attracted ver 250,000 visitors to the Harry Grove Stadium last season.

The proposal is still being negotiated and has not yet been finalized.
