Frederick, MD – Following a Major League Baseball proposal to cut affiliations with over 40 minor league baseball teams including the Hagerstown Suns and Frederick Keys, members of Congress are stepping up to the plate.
The task force includes Representatives Lori Trahan of Massachusetts and David Mckinley of West Virginia, seeking to resist the MLB’s plan that would eliminate 40% of minor league affiliations.
“With this proposal, MLB is willing to break the hearts of dozens of communities across the country,” Frederick Keys General Manager Dave Ziedelis said. “We are going to resist this plan and are gratified that so many in Congress are willing to join with us.”
Ziedelis said the proposed cut would reduce family friendly entertainment and would eliminate thousands of jobs.
The MLB reports the proposal was created to reorganize and make the system more efficient in regards to the league’s affiliations.
The Keys have been the Advanced Class A affiliate of the Baltimore Orioles since 1989 and the Suns have been a Class A affiliate of the Washington Nationals since 1993.
The Frederick Keys attracted over 250,000 visitors to the Harry Grove Stadium last season.
If the proposal is finalized, the 42 teams would lose their affiliations at the end of the 2020 season.
