DMV Non-Profit Seeks to Help Caregivers

They want to offer resources and relief.

Frederick, MD – Over 43 million people across the US have given care to an adult or child without being paid.

According to Caregiver.org, these caregivers generate an estimated $470 billion in unpaid services.

An unpaid caregiver can be a family member, partner, spouse, or friend that helps someone with activities of daily living and medical tasks.

The strain of caring for someone can be challenging, and the Chief Mission Officer of Capital Caring Health Carolyn Richar said caregivers don’t have to do it alone.

“We recognize that it’s stressful and exhausting,” Richar said. “People need to learn how to take care of themselves while they take care of others.”

Capital Caring Health is a non-profit located in the D.C., Maryland, Virginia area, providing care services and resources to caregivers.

Richar said being a caregiver can create a heavy burden both physically and financially.

“[Caregivers] are working an equivalent of a full-time job caring for a loved one,” Richar said. “And they’re doing this usually in an isolated situation.”

Capital Caring Health provides services ranging from hospice care to patient pet services, offering various methods of relieving the stress a caregiver might be going through.

Richar said the most important thing people can do in these situations is to reach out and learn about their options and available resources.
