Maryland Citizens’ Health Initiative Speaks out Against Affordable Care Act Ruling

A district court judge ruled that the ACA’s individual mandate is unconstitutional

Baltimore, MD – The Maryland Citizens’ Health Initiative issued a statement last week, explaining their “disappointment” in the 5th Circuit Federal Court decision that the Affordable Care Act’s individual mandate is unconstitutional.

President of the MCHI Vincent DeMarco said the decision puts the health coverage of hundreds of thousands of Marylanders at risk.

“It is a travesty that the Trump administration continues to challenge the Affordable Care Act,” DeMarco said. “We hope the US Supreme Court will quickly uphold the law.”

DeMarco said despite the eventual decision on the ACA, Maryland is moving forward with new initiatives including the Maryland Easy Enrollment Health Insurance Program in January, which will mark Maryland as the first state to use the tax system to help enroll uninsured Marylanders into health coverage offered through Medicaid or private health insurance carriers.

The district courts have taken over the ACA case, but DeMarco said the case will likely find its way back to the Supreme Court in the future.
