Snowstorm Coming Through The Region Could Leave Behind 1 To 3 Inches

SHA says it could create a mess for the afternoon commute.

Frederick, Md (KM) Anyone whose been outside and on the roads knows that it’s snowing. The National Weather Service has put a Winter Weather Advisory in Effect until 7:00 PM on Tuesday.  The agency says one  to three inches of snow could fall, with locally higher amounts over northern Maryhland.

Spokesman Charlie Gischlar with the Maryland State Highway Administration says crews are treating the roads. “Thankfully, at this point, the surface temperatures on the pavement are well above freezing. It’s just melting as it hits,” he says.

Frederick County Public Schools  closed early.

But Gischlar says when the evening rush hour begins, motorists heading home from work will be sharing the roads with snow plows and other equipment. “So we’re just asking folks if you see our snow plows or plow trains, just stay behind them. Let them get out in front so they can keep the lanes open,”: he says.

Forecasters say the snow is expected to continue until 8:00 PM on Tuesday. Gischlar says SHA crews will still be busy even after the precipitation ends. “We were not able pre-treat during this storm because it’s starting as a wet, wet snow and rain mix. It would totally wash it off the roadways. So we’re going to be in active deployment through the evening, and we’re going to be patrolling for any  icy spots and re-freezes through the dawn hours of Wednesday morning,” he says.
