Where Registered Sex Offenders Can Live Was Discussed Last Week By the Frederick County Legislative Delegation

Lawmakers plan to look into the issue further.

Annapolis, Md (KM) Concerns regarding registered sex offenders came up on Friday during the weekly meeting of the Frederick County Legislative Delegation.

Delegate Jesse Pippy says fellow Delegate Dan Cox brought up a concern from some people in Thurmont who were worried about a registered sex offender living near where children congregate. He also says these people reported some suspicious activity at that individual’s home. “And so they wanted to know what sort of options do they have to prevent someone they perceive to be a risk or a danger to minors as it pertains to those individuals. So we actually have to do some research to do on that,” he says.

According to an on line post by the law firm of James E. Crawford, Jr., and Associates in Baltimore, Maryland law does not have any restrictions on where a registered sex offender can live. Other states do have that requirement.

Under Maryland law, a person convicted of a sex offense is  required to register as a sex offender with local law enforcement wherever they live, work or go to school. A Tier One offender must register for 15 years. As a tier 2 offender, they must remain on the sex offender registry for 25 years. Those with a tier 3 conviction are required to register as a sex offender for life.

Persons can be removed from the registry if they have died, been pardoned for their crimes, or had  their records expunged.
