Man Pleads Guilty For Threatening Congress Member

He’s scheduled to be sentenced in May.

 

Baltimore, Md (KM) A Westminster man pleaded guilty in federal court on Friday for making a threat to a member of Congress.. . The US Attorney’s Office for Maryland says Darryl Albert Varnum, 43, entered his plea in US District Court in Baltimore to making a threatening communication.

Federal officials say Varnum called the Congressmember’s office on June 26th, 2019, and left a voice mail message in which he threatened to kill that US Representative who supported legislation Varnum opposed. The US Attorney’s Office did not identity the Congressmember, but said the office was located in Florida.

Varnum faces a maximum of five years in prison when he’s sentenced on May 20th, 2020. But officials say actual sentences for federal crimes are typically less than the maximum penalty.

“We take violent threat extremely seriously,” says US Attorney for Maryland Robert Hur, in a statement. “The investigation began immediately upon learning of the threats. Mr. Varnum was arrested on July 8th, and subsequently indicted.”
