Consumers can save Energy Star appliances.
Annapolis, Md. (KM) If you’re in the market for a new appliance, such as a refrigerator, air conditioner, washer and dryer, furnace, heat pump, dehumidifier or LED light bulbs, these products will cost you a little less this weekend. Shop Maryland Energy Weekend is taking place between Saturday, February 15th through Monday, February 17th.
Comptroller Peter Franchot says the state will not charge the sales tax on purchases of these appliances during that time. “On top of that, this weekend the manufacturers are giving discounts. The stores themselves are giving discounts. The utilities are giving discounts because these are energy efficient appliances,” he says.
As an example, Franchot says if you pay $1000 for an appliance, you would not have to pay the $60 sales tax.
Franchot says this tax-free weekend attracts even consumers from outside of Maryland. “I love the fact that I see a lot of Pennsylvania license plates, and West Virginia license plates at Maryland malls, shopping and taking advantage of tax free, President’s Day weekend,” he says.
The State Comptroller’s Office says this tax-free weekend benefits merchants during a normally slow time for retailers, and it provides incentive for customers to shop for Energy Star appliances.
