Frederik, MD – A walk is coming to Downtown Frederick this spring to raise funds to cure ALS.

The Western Maryland walk to defeat ALS is Saturday, April 18 in Baker Park and seeks to raise money for research and advocacy groups for those living with the disease.

Matthew Cook of the ALS Association at the D.C. Maryland and Virginia Chapter said 20,000 people in the U.S. currently have ALS which is also known as Lou Gehrig’s disease.

“Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis is a progressive nuero degenerative disease that affects nerve cells in the brain and the spinal cord,” Cook said. “there is currently no cure and it is 100% fatal.”

Cook said an estimated 400 Marylanders have ALS and military veterans are twice as likely to develop ALS than those that haven’t served.

Check-in for the event starts at 9 A.M. and it starts at 10 A.M.
