Md. Health Officials Urge Residents To Take Precautions Against Coronavirus

They say the public threat is low at this time.

Baltimore, Md (KM) Even though the public health threat remains low at this time, the Maryland Department of Health is urging residents to take precautions against the coronavirus. That includes washing your  hands frequently with soap and water, or an alcohol-based hand sanitizer. In addition, covering you mouth and nose when coughing or sneezing and staying home from school or work if you  feel sick.

“We want all Marylanders to know that we’re closely monitoring the COVID-19 developments and are working with our federal, state and local partners to help keep you safe and healthy,”: says Robert Neil, Secretary of the Maryland Department of Health, in a statement. “But everyone can play a role in preparedness—stay informed and use every day healthy habits to limit your exposure to illness.”

Maryland has many resources to assist in its fight against the coronovirus. “Maryland is home to some of the best medical and research facilities in the world,” says Fran Phillips, Deputy Secretary for Public Health. “These partners are working closely with us, and operating at an enhanced level to support our efforts statewide. We also remain in close communication with the State Department of Education, and higher education institutions.”

The Department of Health says so far, 13 people have  been tested for the disease. The agency says seven people are currently being tested;. six were previously tested for COVID-19, and those results were negative. There have been no cases of the coronavirus detected so far in the state.

“It’s important to know that the vast majority of people recover from this infection,”: says Phillips. “Many patients will only have mild to moderate symptoms.”
