Maryland Received More than 42,000 Unemployment Claims

State Schools Superintendent orders day care centers to close by end of business on Friday.

ANNAPOLIS, Md. (AP) — Maryland has received more than 42,000 unemployment insurance claims in a week’s time, and the state is closing child care programs in response to the coronavirus.

Maryland’s labor department announced Thursday that the new unemployment insurance claims were received last week as businesses closed in response to the virus. That breaks the previous record set in 1982.

Meanwhile, State Superintendent of Schools Karen Salmon wrote child care programs in the state are to be closed by the end of the day Friday. Salmon says the state has established child care programs to serve only designated essential personnel.
