Mt. Airy, Md (KM) The Town of Mount Airy is seeking a waiver to Frederick County’s order to keep a number of businesses closed due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

In a statement, Mayor Patrick Rockinberg noted that town is partly in Frederick County, and partly in Carroll County. The Governor’s lifting of the stay-at-home order and allowing some businesses to reopen affects the Carroll County side. But County Executive Jan Gardner says the stay-at-home order is still in affect in Frederick County and several businesses remain closed such as hair salons and barbershops. . Mayor Rockinberg says this waiver, if it’s granted, will give all businesses in Mount Airy a level playing field., and provide consistency.

The Governor’s directive allows some counties to decide when to reopen if they feel they’re not ready to do so yet.

In his statement, Mayor Rockinberg said “we breathe of sigh of relief” as the mandatory stay-at-home order from the Governor is now a recommendation, and some businesses are allowed to reopen, but at 50% capacity. However, he asks Mount Airy residents to remember the safer methods they’ve learned over the past two months, and that any “small steps can be reversed” if they become too careless and abandon these procedures to stay safe.

“ifs important we work together to keep us all safe and to limit spill over and contamination in our town,” the Mayor’s statement said. “Let’s all continue to do our part.”
