COVID-19 Pandemic Cancels Fundraisers For Area Fire Companies

Emmitsburg, Md (KM) At this time of year, a lot of volunteer fire companies would be holding fundraisers such as carnivals and other events. But the prohibition imposed by the state on gatherings of more than ten people due to the COVID-19 pandemic has led the cancellations of these events.

One is the Spring Fling sponsored by the Vigilant Hose Company in Emmitsburg.   President Tom Ward says the company had to call off the event which would have taken place on Saturday, May 16th. “And it’s our annual, biggest day of the year fundraiser,”: he says. “We have fundraisers throughout the year, but this is our biggest, single, one-day fundraiser. And it brings in roughly over $25,000 to $30,000 for the fire company. ”

Ward says the decision to call off the event was  due to concerns about the coronavirus. “Because of the ongoing situation in the world with global health concerns, and directives from federal and state leaders, we thought it was prudent in March to cancel the event for the health and well being of our community and our members,” he says.

The Prohibition against gatherings of more than ten people is designed to slow the spread of the COVID-19 virus, according to state officials.

Ward says the money raised from the Spring Fling is used for fire fighting, purchases of supplies and equipment,  and maintaining the fire hall.

But he says other fundraising events are planned, such as drive-through events, and a summer raffle where participants can win different coolers, cash prizes and gift cards for various local restaurants.

Ward says residents can find out information on upcoming events by going on line to www.vhc6.com, or check out the Vigilant Hose Company Facebook page. They can also call the fire hall at 301-447-2728,
