Layoff Notices Sent To Frederick County School System Employees

They work in Food & Nutrition, & Transportation.

Frederick, Md (KM) A 30-day notice was given on Wednesday to Frederick County School System employees who will be laid off. They work in the Food and Nutrition, and Transportation Departments, including cafeteria workers and bus drivers. . The effective date is September 15th.

The reduction in force notice, or RIF, was given to these employees as part of a negotiated agreement between the School System and the Frederick Association of School Support Employees (FASSE).

The School System says these workers were laid off because they were not needed as schools are reopening virtually this fall due to concerns about the coronavirus.

“I want to emphasize that this is a temporary RIF,” said Superintendent of Schools Dr. Theresa Alban, in a statement. “When FCPS is able to return to fully normal operations, these jobs will return.”

The Board of Education says it will continue funding these employees’ health, dental and prescription coverages.

In a statement, the School System didn’t indicated how many workers will be affected, but Board of Ed President Brad Young says it’s “in excess of 500.”
