Capt. Dwight Sommers will take over as Acting Chief. 
Frederick, Md (KM) Frederick City’s Acting Police Chief has announced his retirement. Captain Patrick Grossman says he’s stepping down after serving the city fr 23 years. He joined the police department in 1997. .Grossman’s last day on the job is Friday, October 30th.
“As I publicly announce my retirement from the Frederick Police Department. I want to thank Mayor O’Connor for the trust and confidence invested in me to lead this agency as the Chief of Police. I am amazed each day by the steadfast commitment, dedication, and professionalism of all Department members as we collectively worked towards the accomplishment of our mission statement and serve our citizens. I am humbled each day by the tremendous outpouring of support and generosity of our community. It is through this support and the numerous relationships and partnerships fostered over the years that make The City of Frederick more than a city, but a community in the truest sense. I will always be eternally grateful for these relationships as they helped me grow as both a leader and a person,” said Chief Grossman in statement.
In that same statement, Chief Grossman said he planned to pursue personal and professional opportunities after his retirement.
Captain Dwight Sommers will take over as Acting Chef. “I am proud and extremely happy for Chief Grossman. He has been a steadfast leader in the Frederick Police Department for 23 years. Since February, our community has faced challenges like no other. Chief Grossman has steered our agency through these challenging times with courage, commitment, and hard work,” shared Captain Sommers, in a statement.. “I would like to thank Mayor O’Connor for the opportunity to lead the Frederick Police Department as the new acting chief and continue the mission of our agency. I am extremely proud of the men and women I work with. Their accomplishments are many – and their commitment to public safety is never-ending. It is the goal of the FPD to continue fostering and enhancing our relationships with all citizens. I look forward to continuing this noble effort.”
Mayor Michael O’Connor has high praise for Acting Chief Grossman as he retires. “I’m extraordinarily proud of Chief Grossman’s service to the City over the last 23 years, and especially over the last seven months through the pandemic and civic protests, our department’s reaccreditation through CALEA, and the expanded implementation of body-worn cameras,” said the Mayor,. in a statement.. “His commitment to the agency and the City has been exemplary.”
These changes at the top are taking place as the City of Frederick is conducting a nationwide search for a new police chief.
