Emmitsburg, Md (KM) A vehicle chase with shots fired left one suspect dead on Monday afternoon.

Frederick County Sheriff Chuck Jenkins says the pursuit began in Pennsylvania where State Police and New Cumberland Township Police were pursuing a vehicle along Route 15. One of the occupants was a suspect in an attempted homicide, according to Jenkins.

The chase continued into Maryland toward the Thurmont area, and then went back to the Emmitsburg. The Sheriff says along the way, shots were fired at a police vehicle.

The vehicle being pursued crashed at Route 15 near Route 140. Both occupants got out and fled. One of the suspects was taken into custody.

Jenkins says the second individual ran away, but was located at the Exxon convenience store at Routes 15 and 140. “That’s where the second suspect fired at law enforcement, including my deputies. Deputies returned fire. There was another agency which returned fire,” he says. “The suspect fell. He was taken into custody. He has since died.”

That  suspect medivaced by State Police helicopter where he died.

At this time, it’s uncertain which the officers who confronted the suspect at the Exxon station fired the fatal shot.

Jenkins says the two also tried to run over an officer, and a police car was shot up.
