Frederick, MD (KB)   The Governor recently announced that Maryland has been provided additional federal funding to go toward rent and utility relief.

Frederick County Executive Jan Gardner announced how much was allocated to the county at a public information briefing on Thursday.

“We have received over $7.7 million dollars, that’s actually been transferred to our bank account so we have that in hand, from the Federal Government for rental assistance and utility assistance,” she said.

Gardner said the money will be used to create a new program for residents who are behind on their rent and utility payments, and expand previous programs.

“Once again, we’ll be working with the Religious Coalition, but we’re also going to add 211 to help residents apply for these funds,” she explained. “We’re definitely going to add some staff to help get this money out, and we’ll be able to expand upon the previous programs.”

The County Executive explained how this money can help those who are behind on payments.

“What we know right now is we will be able to cover back rent for up to 12 months, which is much longer than in the prior program,” she said. “We can also provide rental assistance looking forward for three months into the future.”

Gardner said she plans to have extensive ad campaigns so that all residents in need of help are aware of the program. She said applications might not be available until mid-to-late February.

She also said this program will not apply to mortgage relief.

The County Executive said she plans to announce more coronavirus relief information over the next few weeks.
