Frederick, MD (KB)   With Frederick County Public School students back in the classroom, spokeswoman Sherry Christian for Maryland Department of Transportation State Highway Administration wants to remind motorists to practice safe driving.

“We want to remind people of the three ‘E’s of safety — education, engineering, and enforcement,” Christian said. “We are partnering with state, local, and private partners to focus on preventing pedestrian crashes and eliminating traffic fatalities.”

Hybrid learning began on February 16th in Frederick County.

Christian also said drivers should avoid distracted driving.

“We want folks to keep their eyes on the road, and make sure to remind them that it’s illegal to use handheld phones and devices or text while driving,” she stated.

She encouraged those behind the wheel to slow down and use caution around pedestrians and school buses. She reminded motorists what to do when they encounter a school bus.

“Going back to the flashing red lights on the school bus, when they go on and the stop sign flaps come out, drivers in both directions are required, by law, to stop,” she explained.

Christian also said now is an excellent time for parents, whose children walk to and from school, to discuss pedestrian safety.

Children should always use sidewalks, marked crosswalks, use caution around driveways, and look both ways before crossing the street.

Christian recommended students stay alert while walking — this means no headphones or handheld games.
