Frederick, Md (KM) Frederick County middle and high school students have elected a student Board of Education member for the 2021-2022 academic year. Sam Starrs is a junior at Oakdale High, and will assume his new position on July 1st. Prior to that, he will shadow current student Board member Mia Martinez from Brunswick High.

In addition to submitting  an application which is reviewed by the Frederick County Association of Student Councils and  SGA advisers, each candidate for student School Board member answers questions proposed during a town hall format which is broadcast over FCPS television, and was posted on line in January. Each candidate submits a one-page, online platform statement.

Starrs was elected in an on line voting process.

In his platform, Starrs says he will work on issues concerning mental health awareness and racial injustice.

The student Board of Ed member brings a student’s perspective on education during BOE meetings. This individual is expected to respect the diversity of students’ points of view, improve communication between the student body, the staff and the Board of Education. That person also must inform students of board polices and decisions.
