The victims were also US Navy Sailors.
Frederick, MD (KB) The suspect in a double shooting on Tuesday morning in Frederick has been identified.
38-year-old Fantahun Girma Woldesenbet, an active-duty Navy Petty Officer stationed at Fort Detrick, shot and critically injured two U.S. Navy Sailors also assigned to Fort Detrick, Frederick Police say.
Frederick Police Chief Jason Lando said both victims were taken to Shock Trauma in Baltimore.
“One victim is in critical condition,” said Lando, who briefed reporters during a news conference Tuesday afternoon. Fort Detrick reports on its Facebook page that the second victim has been released from the hospital.
The incident:
At around 8:20 Tuesday morning, Frederick Police received a call for an active shooter at the Riverside Technology Park on Progress Drive. Chief Lando said the shooting occurred at a Navy-related facility in the office park.
“Upon arrival at the scene, they found two adult males had been shot,” said Lando. “They were flown by helicopter to Baltimore Shock Trauma.”
Lando said the shooter, Woldesenbet, then traveled to the Fort Detrick Military Base.
Brigadier General Michael J. Talley said at approximately 8:45 a.m., Woldesenbet drove a personally owned vehicle through a Fort Detrick gate. . He said prior to that, the Frederick Police Department had issued a “Be On the Look Out” report for both the vehicle and the subject.
Talley said the subject was stopped at the Nalin Pond gate located off of Oppossumtown Pike, but sped past the gate before his vehicle could be searched. Woldesenbet was stopped in a parking lot where he brandished a rifle.
He was shot within minutes by Fort Detrick Police. After lifesaving efforts were initiated, Woldesenbet was pronounced dead at the scene.
General Talley said the motive is under investigation He also said investigators are looking into whether Woldesenbet and the two victims knew each other.
Frederick City Mayor Michael O-Connor:
“I don’t think you could ever know how these incidents are going to transpire,” he stated. “We’re lucky, I think, to be able to go back and rely on the training of the agencies involved, to be able to respond as quickly as they can, they’re rapidly evolving situations, and everybody did their jobs today. It’s just a tragic situation.”
Lt. Andrew Alcorn with the Frederick Police said the shootings occurred inside the military institution at the Riverside Industrial Park.

Lando said the shooter then traveled to the Fort Detrick Military Base. Fort Detrick Police said the suspect broke through the Nalin Pond gate located off of Oppossumtown Pike, and he was killed within minutes by US Navy personnel.
Fort Detrick Police have also identified the suspect as a 38-year-old active-duty Navy Sailor who was stationed at Fort Detrick. He was pronounced dead on the scene after medical lifesaving procedures were initiated.

Lando said the most recent update on the victims is that they are both in critical condition in Baltimore. He also said police have confirmed that there was only one shooter and the public is no longer at risk.
