Frederick, Md. (DG) – Interstate 70 eastbound was closed for several hours in Frederick County on Sunday by Mt Phillip Road due to a fatal accident.
The crash happened at around 1:30pm when a Subaru Outback was traveling eastbound on Interstate 70 in the area of Mount Phillip Road.
Maryland State Police are reporting for unknown reasons the driver of the vehicle lost control, collided into a roadway sign, and struck the guardrail. Due to the damage sustained to the vehicle it caught fire.
The driver was able to exit the vehicle before the Subaru became fully engulfed in flames. The passenger was unable to exit the vehicle and was pronounced dead at the scene. The driver of the vehicle was taken to Meritus Hospital for injuries sustained from the collision.
Alcohol has not yet been ruled out as a primary factor for the collision.
